It’s that time of year again when I dedicate an entire weekend (54 hours to be exact) to hanging out with strangers and working on a project we all think is cool enough to spend a weekend on, without any prior knowledge of what’s going to happen – other than a pitch on a Sunday night. If we have met in person, you know I am a huge fan of Startup Weekend. This month marks a year since my first one in Columbus, OH. I had a blast working on Nom Now, a mobile food delivery app. Team NomNow was amazing and even today although we all live in different cities and even separate coasts – they are people I stay in touch. I can honestly say that both of the startup weekends I have attended have made a major impact in the trajectory of months to follow. Either I have made life long friends or have started working on continuing the project in one way or another or applied for a job I wouldn’t have otherwise been aware of was even available. Startup Weekend made those things possible, which I think is pretty cool. It also fosters a different way of thinking, which isn’t exercised in the work settings or group projects in class. Going in with a goal and endless possibilities is such a breath of fresh air.
Tonight I will be attending my third Startup Weekend. It’s the first one I am going in thinking- maybe I could actually place/win. I don’t mean to sound cocky, but I think I have a solid chance to be part of a winning team. If not, no sweat – I still get all my meals included for the weekend and a nice t shirt. Regardless of what happens I am excited to once again work on an awesome idea with complete strangers and come out the other side being a better team player. If you are attending Startup Weekend DC this weekend I hope you come and say Hi. I don’t bite and maybe we will end up as teammates.
